The Wake-Up Call

The sun had not even cleared the horizon when the siren's wail tore through the barracks. No time for kibble. No time for belly rubs. Trillium was under threat and the squadron needed to move now.

Boots and paws hit the floor in the same chaotic scramble. Harnesses snapped, rifles slung, and the pack poured into the pre-dawn dark with ears flat and teeth bared, already tasting the fight that waited beyond the wire.

Scramble to the Skies

Paws thundered against the metallic deck. Pilot 6057 slid into the cockpit, the neural link syncing instantly with the ship's AI. 'Systems green,' a digital voice barked as the canopy hissed shut.

The smell of ozone and jet fuel filled the air. With a sharp whine of the turbines, the interceptor locked into the catapult. 6057 gripped the flight stick, ears pinned back in focus. 'Clear for takeoff.'

The launch officer’s confirmation was still ringing in his headset when the rails slammed him backward. The world compressed into a tunnel of screaming metal and white-hot thrust; the carrier deck vanished in a blur, and then there was only sky—vast, empty, and suddenly his.

Radar painted the incoming contacts almost immediately: two fast movers hugging the deck, running hot and silent. 6057 rolled the interceptor into a shallow dive, afterburners kicking in with a deep, hungry roar.

Gravity pressed 6057 into the seat as the jet screamed into the stratosphere. Below, Trillium looked like a peaceful tapestry. Ahead, the unknown awaited as the squadron broke the sound barrier.

Then the threat board lit crimson. A contact bloomed on the scope, too fast, too silent, cutting across their climb like a blade. For three heartbeats the squadron held the intercept, engines howling, weapons hot, the peaceful world below forgotten. Then the IFF finally coughed its delayed handshake: a friendly recon drone thrown off course by the same shockwave they had just punched through. Safeties clicked back on. The formation rolled out and settled. All was safe again. Threat averted.
