The Mountain Cabin

In a remote valley in the Japanese mountains, the elderly Shiba Kaito and his young pup Hana live in a simple wooden cabin. Their life is simple, but it is enough for the loyal pair.
Their days consist of patrolling the forest trails, scavenging berries, hunting small game for the farmer who cares for them, and sleeping by the fire. Hana is playful and curious. Kaito is calm and wise. They have little, but their days are filled with fresh air, loyalty, and each other’s company.

The Discovery

During a hunting trip, Hana finds a rusty chest among the roots of an old tree. Inside are ancient gold coins, a silver amulet, and a letter from a merchant who once hid the treasure. Kaito recognizes the scent of human greed. For the first time, Hana sees something glistening that promises more than a bone or a warm spot by the fire. The temptation is strong.

The Temptation of the City

A traveling merchant hears about the discovery and offers Kaito and Hana a life in the city: a large house, soft pillows, endless meat, and status. Hana is excited by all the promises. Kaito hesitates. He sees how restless and jealous the merchant himself is, despite all his possessions. At night, Hana dreams of luxury, but wakes up feeling empty.

Kaito takes Hana back to the quiet valley. He shows her the sunrise over the mountains, the scent of wet earth after the rain, and the warm feeling of hunting and sleeping together. “You can buy wealth,” his demeanor seems to say, “but not this sense of freedom and togetherness.” Hana understands. They bury the chest under the tree again. Not out of fear, but by choice.

Years later, Hana herself has grown up. She leads her own puppies through the same woods. The farmer has grown old, but the Shibas remain. They have never known wealth in the form of money or possessions, but they have known it in every morning walk, every shared meal, and every quiet evening by the fire. The legend in the village does not tell of a found treasure, but of the Shibas who knew that happiness lies not in gold, but in a simple, faithful life.
